Eeeek! 3 weeks to file your tax return

You have 3 weeks to file your tax return, so I’ll be brief and helpful!

Remember how this feels

Remembering how horrible this is will help to ensure you don’t get in this same tight squeeze next year. I talk about this ‘pain point’ in chapter 1 of The Magical Mix of Money & Tax but for the purposes of this blog, be mindful of why waiting to the last minute is not such a good idea for either you, your family or your clients.

Bring in a little compassion

You have been procrastinating for a reason. That reason may be conscious or unconscious but the only way to overcome it is by letting go of judgment. In The Magical Mix of Money & Tax I discuss how it’s likely one of the following:

  • outright denial,

  • a subconscious defensive mechanism kicking in,

  • how you feel about tax and your government,

  • time constraints,

  • how you feel about money in general,

  • your pricing is wrong,

  • not knowing what to claim, and/ or

  • unable to tackle such a mammoth task in one sitting.

I give solutions to all of these in The Magical Mix of Money & Tax, but I’ll explore the latter two below as these are the most common.

Know what you’re doing

You must know what you can and cannot claim. This is one of the common reasons people get stuck. There are serious implications if you claim something you shouldn’t so it’s important you know what is a legit business expense and what isn’t. Visit HMRC’s website for more details, or see a previous blog I wrote: What can I claim as a Business Expenses?

Take action in small manageable steps

Like any task, it’s much easier to tackle, if done in manageable steps. In chapter 6 of The Magical Mix of Money & Tax, I help the reader do just that. However, to help you finally breakthrough the tax return procrastination, I’m going to give you all of chapter 6 for free. To access the free chapter, just click the click below.
