Are you happy in your business?

Happiness has been the topic of conversation this week amongst myself and other business owners so it seemed appropriate to write about it…

You’ll be familiar with the question “So, what have you been up to lately?’ and the frequent requests for updates on social media as to what you’re doing and with whom. I wonder if you like this or not.

I hate this question and have drastically reduced my time on social media because my answer and the response is typically the same each time – “Busy working away on client work, reading a good book, catching up on my finances, writing my next book and/or keeping up with my studies”. The reply I then tend to get is – ‘You need to get out more!’ or more annoyingly is ‘You need to get a life!’

This frustrates me as I have a life and I enjoy it very much. I only don’t when others criticise it. I do get out and do exciting things, but I simply see them as experiences between me and those I’m with and therefore don’t always feel the need to tell others about it. What about you?

It has taken me a long time to be comfortable saying I’m an accountant, an author and/ or a psychology student.

The former has actually stopped conversations in the past (even with business owners), the latter has provoked ‘oh’ and although the author label elicited more excitement than the others, it soon stopped the conversation when they found out about the kind of things I wrote about…

I wouldn’t say I’m wholly comfortable & confident about how others respond to my choice of happiness activities yet and whilst my life is still not exactly as I would like it, I continually reflect and do more of what makes me happy and get curious as to how to improve the stuff that doesn’t.

Recently I have been embracing who I am and what makes me tick more and when someone recently responded differently with “As long as you’re happy” to which I absentmindedly nodded, I realised I was happy. And I am happy when I’m doing accounts because it grounds me in reality. I love writing because it’s a way I can express my introvert self. Reading nourishes me and learning about human behaviours and thought processes expands my mind and helps me to understand myself and those around me.

I don’t need to apologise to anyone about what makes me happy and neither do you

We are all different and we all have different things that ‘float our boat’. If you haven’t already I encourage you to question what really makes you happy and ensure that is something that you bring into your business. In both, 12 Steps to Improve Your Cashflow and Successful Business Minds, I encourage the reader to do just that too because when you are happy in your business, you will be embracing your strengths and that is how your business grows. Furthermore, I don’t believe success is limited to the financial aspects of our life. I believe success (aka happiness) is about being successful in all areas of our life which I do hope you got from reading Successful Business Minds!

I encourage you to notice how people differ from you and then accept them for that (so long as they are not harming you or doing something illegal!) and embrace who you are too.

Take care and speak to you next week!
