Book Launch Diary: 4 days to go!

spine

On Saturday I attended day 1 of a book marketing weekend workshop and had a very enjoyable evening chatting with a new friend.

The book marketing workshop was being run by Karen Williams of Librotas and Sheryl Andrews of Step by Step Listening, and it was perhaps a tad late in the day for me to be thinking about some of the things we talked about (in regards to a book launch for example). However, I have been working with Karen since June last year so thankfully most of it had been discussed between us and the workshop went into other areas. Additionally, it gave me some great ideas for my next book!

Oh yes, there will be more. Once I have recovered from this one though…

It was good to get practice attempting to sum up the book with others. Can I explain everything the book discusses? Obviously, it is challenging to sum up 55,000 words in 1 minute or less. It’s OK, I will go into more detail at the book launch but it was more a matter of whether we could hold the book up and say XXXX at a networking event for example. The book cover should also be able to help with this.

Which then brought us back to the ‘issue’ over the book cover. Some of my classmates spotted it immediately, others even when looking for it couldn’t see it. That gave me some relief!

It is annoying and I could have chosen to get 150 books reprinted. As an accountant that didn’t sit well with me. I have spent a lot of money on this book and it’s only a small error in the book cover. OK, it does mean it stands out on the book shelf but well I kinda think that sums me up!

So if we are to judge a book by its cover, what does mine say. Interestingly this was one of the things Sheryl Andrews & I discussed over dinner last night (amongst many other things…). We came up with a few ideas, and I am sure you will have more.

It says I am logical. It says I am different. It says this book was self published. It says I go after my goals. It says there is a bit of informality about me. It says I make mistakes!

Does that sum me up? Yes a little. I am so much more than that though and so is this book.

When a book it’s judge by its cover the person may get it spot on, and they may be way out. This is also what happens when we look at money and when we look at people, particularly those with money. We judge all the time, it appears to be in our very nature.

This book encourages you to stop judging for a moment, that is, if you can get past the cover…
