Do you listen to your business?

numbersOne of the most profound insights for my clients when we work together, and readers when they read the books I have written, is that they realise they are not really listening to their business.

To be fair, it’s not an easy task since it talks in another language!

You see our business, just like our pets, newborn babies and those we meet from a foreign country, are challenging to communicate with, but the more we spend time with them, the more we start to hear what they are saying and how to really hear what they are saying.

Even truly listening to others who talk our language is a challenging task, because, we often listen to what we are saying in our head, rather than what they are saying. Coaches spend a great deal of money and time honing this skill and one of my friends, Sheryl Andrews, is currently writing a book that can help you improve your listening skills. This book is due out in December 2016 and you can pre-order from here.

So how do you listen to your business?

First of all, you need to understand the language it is talking and be ok with hearing it. Your business talks in numbers and if this is something you are unfamiliar with, or something that makes you break out in cold sweat, then this will be challenging to hear.

You likely already know that your business talks to you in financial numbers (money!) but you possibly don’t consciously hear that your business talks to you in time, productivity, and purpose too. Although, deep down I think you do know or you wouldn’t be frustrated or annoyed.

In addition to how much money (or how little!) you are making, your business also tells you how long you have been working on a particular project (time) or how little you have done (productivity), and if you are serving your purpose by how many clients you are helping and how many people you are reaching through blogs, social media posts, newsletters, books and workshops/online programmes.

So I encourage you today do listen to your business and hear what it has to say,
