Resilience, curiosity and acceptance are in our very nature as entrepreneurs

Following on from our blog two weeks ago, Look out for mind gremlins, we have been asked to expand on this as we’re noticing many business owners are either feeling frazzled or fearful about the long term impact to their business, in addition to their suppliers and customers businesses too, as a result of lockdown.

Personally, whilst I don’t know what life after lock down is going to look like for many business, including my own, I am hopeful we can all navigate our way through whatever landscape we find ourselves in post-lockdown with the skills we have developed as entrepreneurs.

As business owners we’re being asked to re-think what we do and how we do it

One thing that is clear from my own experience of running a business, and equally clear from psychology research I have read on entrepreneurs, is that whilst we will never be immune to challenges, we can and do bounce back. It’s called resilience, and it’s why I highly recommended The Mental Toughness Handbook by Damon Zahariades a fortnight ago.

Another book I recommend is The Surrender Experiment by Michael A. Singer, which starts off with a guy just wanting to meditate all day. Yet Michael soon feels the pressure to integrate with life, and and finally finds himself going with whatever comes his way. Later, we find Michael running a large corporation and near the end of the book, he shares with us how he got through a lawsuit that could have seen him go to jail for something he didn’t do. Whilst I enjoyed the whole book, I found the latter chapters incredible insightful as it was easy to see how to apply ‘surrendering’ to big problems in our business.

Another book, Re-entrepreneuring by Charles-Edouard Bouée, is a refreshing read too, as it reminds us that all businesses, no matter what size, experience moments of crises, and these can serve us by encouraging us to change.

Because let’s face it, we all have the mantra “If it ain’t broke, why change it?” running through us

The circumstances we find ourselves in today are surreal to say the least, but we can still apply resilience, curiosity and acceptance to what we’re experience, and change the way we do things, and how we do them, given we have the opportunity to do so.

In short, whilst we can’t control what happens next, we can control how we respond to it, by applying the skills we have developed as entrepreneurs.

Good luck! Hx
