Tax Return Made Simple Series – Busting Challenge No.5

The following is a sample extract of an unedited draft chapter of our forthcoming book, Tax Return Made Simple which addresses each of the 12 challenges that stop most business owners from doing their tax return and their accounts.

Challenge 5: I want to be organised and do my tax return on time, but everyone else files their tax return last minute so why should I be different? I’d rather have that lunch with my friend…

Solution: Stop being a white sheep and go retro purple instead

When it comes to doing your tax return on time and not letting it worry you, this is where being different sits. Whilst writing this book I had an interesting conversation with a new business owner who we’ll call Jenny. Jenny told me that she’d heard within the business community that a tax return was scary and that everyone avoids doing it until the last month. The former is a myth, the latter is what happens when you follow the herd.

Thankfully, Jenny found herself listening to these comments with a curious mind, and questioned whether it was the only option or was there another way? After discussing the tax return myths, with someone Jenny trusted, she was told that it’s easy to file your own return, especially after getting some help from someone like me. Jenny then immediately called me up for an appointment and we had her doing her tax return in the summer.

There are many myths in the business community just as there are many myths about psychology in the personal development community (you’d be blown away by all the myths out there!) but it helps if like Jenny you pause for a moment and ask ‘is there another way?’

This was the foundation of Successful Business Minds. After years of watching other business owners be white sheep (do what they thought they should be doing and failing), I then looked for some purple sheep (those who listened to what others said, took the advice that resonated with them, left behind the advice that didn’t resonate, then took action towards what they felt drawn to do).

I looked for another way because I felt I had been doing what you’re supposed to do when running a business to fit in, yet I wasn’t achieving what I wanted to achieve nor was I being as organised as I like to be. I told myself there had to be another way, and there was.

There is always another way. It’s called your way.

With that in mind, it’s important that you run your business, do your finances and enjoy your life, with our own desires and intuition running the ship, rather than following the advice of other well-intended business owners who are in the dark as much as you are!
