Are you fed up with your business?

Are you worried about the lack of money, or experiencing anxiety over the mountain of work you need to do and thinking:

Employment was much better than this?!

Can you remember why you started your own business? Is it crystal clear or is it a fuzzy memory of being p*ssed off with your boss.

If you can remember then consider if your challenges are because some decision(s) lately are out of alignment with your reason for starting a business.

You must ensure all your decisions are centred around why you started a business.

If your ‘why’ is a little hazy and/ or are considering going back to employment, then I encourage you to take some time to stop and reflect for a moment. The money worries and workload anxieties can wait for 5 minutes. Neither will be going anywhere and they’ll still be here when you come back, however, you may find yourself feeling differently about them.

First, it’s important to recognise that going back to employment might be the answer for you. Self-employment is not for everyone, and employers need employees. At least you have gained insight into all the problems your bosses encountered and you may even appreciate your job and pay a little more.

Now take a moment to answer the following questions.

Did you set up your own business to:

  1. Do something more fulfilling, more empowering and good for others or the planet, instead of ‘just making money’?

  2. Avoid the rush hour traffic queues or the jammed packed train rides?

  3. Admire the beauty of your home instead of only seeing your house and garden in the daylight at weekends, summer evenings and holidays?

  4. Get to know the community you live in, after having lived there for over 5yrs and never having once visited the newsagent, library or local attraction?

  5. Wake up at a gentle speed, perhaps fit in some yoga, meditation or journalling before rushing of the office?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to one of these questions

When looking for a new job, make sure the job allows you to do this one thing that is important to you, otherwise you will soon be wanting to jump the fence again.

If you answered ‘Yes’ to at least 3 of the these questions

I suggest that you find a way to make this business work. If time and workload is a problem then be honest about everything that is taking up your time with a view to saying goodbye to the distractions. Also consider employing someone, perhaps part time to start with.

However, if money is the problem, then I suggest you look at all your outgoings and make a few cutbacks. Also brainstorm ways you could make money whilst ensuring all those you answered ‘Yes’ to are met.

Furthermore, give thought to your attitude towards money, success and tax.

  • What do you really think of money?

  • What do you really think of those who are financially successful?

  • Are you happy to pay lots of tax?
