Why authors need reviews

Cpa-goeWEAAPyzaAn author writes for two reasons.  Because they love writing and because they want to help others and the best way they know how to do this is through books.

Fiction books can provide light entertainment, an escape from the busyness of every day life or perhaps a little adventure when our own life is feeling a little dull. It may even give us some encouragement to be a little more courageous like our heroine or hero.

Non-fiction books help in many different ways. We can learn so many subjects from them and they give us the tools and insights to overcome multiple challenges in our life and our business.

I had no idea how hard it was to write a book. I scrapped a pass in my Higher English at high school but I still reckoned that I could write a book fairly easily! Erm, not quite…

When you read the final version, you would be amazed at how many hours of writing, deleting, writing, editing and rewriting has gone into that. Then there is the guts that it takes to actually send the book to others for review before it goes to print, and the courage it takes to listen to constructive criticism from an editor, proof-reader and others. Trust me, that’s challenging!

I used to write the occasional review when I had the time or could be bothered and that would only be when the book had really resonated with me. Since writing two books of my own, I now write a review for a book fairly soon after I finish reading it.

I do this, because I know how vulnerable the author is when their book is sitting there waiting for the first review, and then the next, and the next. They want to know that all those hours of hard grafting was worth it. They want to know that they have fulfilled their purpose and made a difference to your life, no matter how small that difference was. They want to know that they have what it takes to write another book and that you want to see more books from them.

So please, if you liked a book that you have read recently, whether it was a fictional book that kept you amused or a non-fiction book where you collected some great insights into something that you could apply in your life and/or business then please tell the author today.

Love Helen x

P.s. I heard that it is National Book Review Month … Whether it is or isn’t, please write that review today.
