Why would I need to be part of a mastermind group?
It is thought that if we are able to make a promise to ourselves then do it (ie. self-accountability) then we don’t need to be part of a paid mastermind group.
I completely get that, as I used to think like that too, now I now have a coach and mentor who I receive a 1-1 service from. I am also part of an informal free mastermind group and a paid formal mastermind group, in addition to being part of many online groups.
Each of them provides me, with different things. And I believe together they all help me achieve success.
I get self-accountability from, erm, myself. I get 1-1 accountability from my coach. I get help from my mentor. I get support and group accountability from my free mastermind group and I get support, help and group accountability from my paid mastermind group.
Looking at that list it would appear there are overlaps but let me explain.
Group accountability and self-accountability are very different. A promise spoken out to others can be far more powerful than one we say to ourselves internally or write in our journal. By telling a group why you are doing something and having to explain how it will happen gets you shining a light on your goals that you may not do alone. The more people you tell, the brighter the light.

Both informal, and formal, mastermind groups will give you support and help. The difference being is a formal mastermind group is facilitated by a coach. Your informal group may have a host. They are there to help you and make sure everyone gets a say, but they are also there to work out things for themselves. That means you will not be getting their full undivided attention. The facilitator of a paid mastermind group is listening to your ever word.
Finances and time may dictate what you are part of and what services you are able to receive. However, I do highly recommend a group mastermind group and that’s not just because I offer these too. Honest!
I offer them because I know they work; due to being part of two this year, I have achieved things I thought were impossible. I only ever wanted 1-1 attention with a coach and that still serves a purpose for me but after signing up to be part of a pilot mastermind group in January I realised just how beneficial they were for me. I also offer them because my time is limited and this way I can help more people for the same period of time and offer what I do for a fraction of the price. It’s a win-win.
Shop around. Look for one that resonates with you. Each of them will be focussed on a particular subject matter, that the facilitator is very experienced in. For example, the ones that I am facilitating will be focussed on what you want from your business (financially and non-financially) and will explore if your beliefs towards money and success are hampering your business being supportive to your personal needs, because that is what I do with my clients. Other mastermind groups focus on online courses or passive income or marketing.
A mastermind group might not be everyone’s cup of tea though but if you are frustrated at promising yourself every year you will do x,y and z. and get to the end of the year and x is not done, y is still a nice dream and you laugh at yourself for ever thinking you could z but you keep it on the list because you have a weird sense of humour, then I do recommend a mastermind group.
Another great thing about a mastermind group is that you have a safe place to celebrate your success. If you have every thought that you are bragging when you share your success stories with your friends or fellow business owners or feel that you can’t celebrate as things are not going so well for them so you tone the success down, then a mastermind group is definitely the place that allows you to celebrate loudly and proudly.
