Why you avoid doing your accounts

One of the reasons you will avoid giving your accounts attention is because you are avoiding doing something else in your business.

I have seen so many businesses not wanting to look at their accounts because deep down they know it is bad news and it will remind them that they need to do something that takes them outside their comfort zone. Interestingly though, I had a client last week who was regularly looking at her accounts, yet came to me thinking she could do better.

We discussed what she was doing and it seemed pretty good from what I could hear but I could sense in her language there was something underlying what she was doing or more to the point, something she was not doing. She was going through the motions of doing her accounts but not really looking at them in a way a finance coach would look at them. Her unconscious was telling her something was up but she did not know what, hence why she came to see me.

Consciously she was satisfying her business mind by looking at her accounts and keeping everything up to date but unconsciously she was neglecting them by not thinking about the potential her business had and the actions she would need to take.  One of the things I love about our unconscious mind, is that we get a sense that something is not right even though on the surface it appears to be. Something deep down knows something and it is trying to tell us. Meditating and talking to a coach (or even just a friend) can help that knowledge surface.

Other reasons why you will avoid doing your accounts is because you have more fun things to do. If you have not already seen it I encourage you to look at the fun video one of my clients did to raise money for charity. She is a drama trainer and consultant who did a series of improvisations on one word. Not surprisingly, I gave her the word accounts (see Monday’s Facebook post) and interestingly she was doing this instead of her accounts ;-). If you tell me what you would rather do and why I will donate a further £1 to the charity.
