Are your goals this year, the same as last year?

goals

Most of us will have woken today after a relaxing Christmas break with a sense of motivation and determination to accomplish our business goals this year. For the majority of these people, including myself, these are likely the same business goals we had last year and the year before, and possibly even the year before that… This can make us feel more determined to achieve them this year!

However it is important we recognise the reasons they did not happen last year, or the year before… Sometimes they might just be too complex and won’t happen in the space of a year and we may even acknowledge that we have actually made some good progress with them. However, there may be other reasons as to why they have not been accomplished just yet. To find these you may need to dig deep.

  • Firstly, you need to look back at last year with compassion and appreciation for everything that did happen. Maybe there was some additional learning that you needed.
  • Then you need to assess your behaviours and unconscious actions/ responses. Perhaps you have a belief that you don’t think you can achieve the goals or maybe you feel you are not worthy of them, or maybe on some level you are somehow resisting them.
  • Lastly, you need to be realistic about what you can do this year on your own with your resources (skills, time and money) and what you may need some help with. That could involve asking for support at home, or maybe employing someone in your business, or gaining focus on your finances

For me, I had big plans for 2014 but I did not achieve them all. When I look back though, I had accomplished loads but just not quite everything that I had hoped to achieve. However they were all things that have contributed to my goals in various different ways and in doing so the goals have grown arms and legs, and are much different from what I had hoped this time last year. I believe this is why we need to be less specific about how the actual goals will be realised and trust that sometimes life has a way of gently moving us in a different direction because it knows another path which is far more magical than we could have possibly imagined on our own.

I learnt lots too. I thought I knew everything I needed to know in order for me to fulfil my goals but I did not. Some of those lessons were painful emotionally, but when I look back with compassion, I have grown so much from those lessons. I also accept life is all about learning and growing. Additionally, I realised that I was resisting my biggest goals. I have never been a big fan of change however I have gradually become more accepting of small changes, however, my biggest goal is going to mean some major changes in my life.

I now look at my goals this year with compassion and trust that somehow I am being pulled towards them and that the right support will make its way to me. One of my biggest lessons last year was patience and therefore I am far more patient with my goals. I do not know if I will accomplish all or even any of them by the end of this year but I do know that I will have moved closer towards them and if life feels that they are not right for me, suggesting something far bigger and more magical, then I will accept graciously.
